The Kottayam Bar Association, the predecessor of the present Bar Association, Kottayam was formed at about this period. The present Bar Association was registered in 1958 as successor to the former Kottayam Bar Association. The Kottayam Bar Association is presently having it´s premises at the Kottayam Collectorate which was allotted to the Association by His Highness Maharaja of Travancore in the year????in recognition of the high caliber of its members. The Kottayam Bar Association has contributed most eminent and renowned Judges who are well known for their practical knowledge of the law as well as juristic vision. Eminent former Justice K.K.Mathew, Justice K.T.Thomas and Justice K.G.Balakrishnan the yester year members of the Bar Association are among the judges who proved their mettle as the most outstanding and brilliant judges of the paramount judicial body of the country, the Supreme Court of India.
The Association has registered in the year 1958 and formed the Bye law setting its own rules and regulations to coordinate and administer the members and staff for the better management and smooth functioning of the Association. The first governing council members was elected in the year 1958 itself and it consisted legal luminaries like; V.V.Anantha Padmanabha Iyer, M.Markose, K.Vasudevan Pillai, N.Govinda Menon, K.Chacko, K.T.Ninan, P.E.Mohammod Mustaffa, K.Ravendranathan Nair and T.V.Yagneswara Iyer. The present membership comes to 1000 in number, and is growing by time. The relationship with bench and bar is very smooth and cordial and it is well known for the decent and aristocratic behavior of the members. The quality of the members and professional standards of Bar Association is highly remarkable and unquestionable in the entire legal fraternity. Accordingly, they adhere to the highest standards of probity and honor and all the members have a mandate to keep up their status through their personal and professional standards and etiquette. The Association is really proud of its member´s etiquette and standard of living. From its very inception, the Kottayam Bar Association has been in the vanguard of the movement for upholding, maintaining and consolidation of the constitutional values of democracy, rule of law and independence of Judiciary. A major landmark of the march of the Bar Association was in the tumultuous period between and . During the period???, the Association has celebrated the Centenary year. The contribution of members of the Bar Association, during these years of the association, no doubt this would have been impossible without the wisdom and judicial statesmanship of our colleagues . We salute all our colleagues who have fought to expand the rights of the citizens with its inherent limitations that have empowered the people to have a better society. We are proud of our heritage. We have a glorious past. Our Association was able to produce eminent lawyers endowed with deep knowledge of law and extraordinary skills with firm integrity and moral courage. The Kottayam Bar Association hope that they provide the society a view of the law that has come alive through its dynamic interpretation assisted by the indispensable role of a sensitive and committed bar though the years and also to carry on the mantle of glorious heritage.
